FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thursday, November 10, 2011 ReliOn Fuel Cells Assist During Storm Outages
Spokane, WA – ReliOn’s fuel cell systems in the Northeast United States have had a busy two months. Hit by two very different types of storms, the Northeast has endured widespread power outages caused first by Hurricane Irene in August and then by a freak winter storm in October which dropped as much as two feet of snow on states with trees still sporting fall leaves. ReliOn customers in the Northeast include Tier One telecommunications operators tasked with providing communications capabilities to their cell phone customers.
Hurricane Irene, the second largest storm in history in terms of power outages, affected customers across 14 states, causing widespread flooding and property damage. Thousands of cell sites were without power for extended periods. One ReliOn customer had fifty-six cell towers with power being backed up by fuel cells in the area hit by the storm. Forty-five of those sites experienced grid power outages in excess of six hours during the storm and forty-five ReliOn fuel cell systems successfully provided power to the communications equipment for a cumulative outage time of 725 hours. Average duration per site was 16 hours, with the maximum single outage duration being 50 hours. ReliOn's bulk hydrogen refueling provider, Air Products, was key to keeping these sites operational.
In late October, much of the same region experienced an early season snowstorm that dumped wet, heavy snow on New England, causing power outages to about 3 million people and businesses. Some of those people are now in their second week without power. Cumulative data is not yet available, but ReliOn fuel cells have again been called into service and have provided power to cellular customers.
Joe Blanchard, ReliOn’s COO commented, “Without power, none of the convenient and life-saving mobile devices can function. Balancing the need for power with the desire to work toward a sustainable environment is something all of us continue to strive for. Fuel cells are serving an important function in the telecom industry and ReliOn is fully committed to supporting the mission of our customers.”
Hydrogen fuel cells provide backup power to customer sites when grid power fails due to extreme weather or other conditions. ReliOn products have been active in a variety of communications applications since 2004. During this time, ReliOn fuel cell systems have been operational during a number of hurricane, ice storm, wind and extreme temperature events.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, November 1, 2011 ReliOn DMFC Patent Shows Technical Breadth
Spokane, WA – ReliOn, the leading provider of high reliability fuel cell solutions for backup power applications, today announced it has received notice of the issuance of a new patent, “Direct Liquid Fuel Cell”, patent number 8,003,274. Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC) are a type of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cells that are fueled by direct use of liquid methanol as opposed to packaged hydrogen gas or a fuel reformer that splits the hydrogen off a hydrocarbon molecule. End use applications for DMFC fuel cells include the replacement of conventional batteries in portable electronic devices, such as cell phones, laptop computers, digital music players, and the like. Small-scale, portable fuel cells offer the promise of greater run times for these devices and less environmental impact than traditional batteries.
One of the greatest challenges facing the widespread implementation of DMFC fuel cells relates to the ability to increase power density. ReliOn’s new patent provides solutions using electrically-conductive ceramic materials that facilitate improved performance over the active area of the membrane in order to facilitate the efficient operation of the fuel cell.
Gary Flood, ReliOn President and CEO commented, “ReliOn is based on a philosophy of innovation and differentiation in core technology. This is one of several new patents ReliOn has been awarded over the last six months and it speaks to the strength of our R&D program. ReliOn continues to invest in novel core fuel cell technologies, as they are at the heart of ReliOn products.”

RELEASE
Tuesday, October 12, 2010 Bulk Hydrogen Refueling Opens New Markets for Fuel Cells
Spokane, Wash.: ReliOn, the leading provider of high reliability fuel cell solutions for backup power applications, today announced the development of a bulk hydrogen refueling solution for fuel cell installations. This capability provides customers with the ability to have longer runtimes and greater storage of hydrogen fuel at their sites. Refueling is accomplished by on site refilling of the hydrogen storage container. Bulk refueling opens larger markets to fuel cell installations by extending the time between refills and making refueling safe, fast and convenient for customers.
There are multiple advantages of hydrogen as a fuel. Hydrogen does not have a shelf life. It can reside in storage containers indefinitely, which means that unlike fuels like diesel, hydrogen can be used to either frequently or infrequently provide energy regardless of when a power outage occurs. With hydrogen, there is also no issue of ground contamination in the event of spillage. Fuels like propane and diesel, which are heavier than air, can cause costly pollution or safety issues if a leak occurs. Hydrogen is lighter than air and dissipates easily. Because hydrogen and fuel cells do not cause pollution, they can be used in locations where environmental concerns are at the forefront. Fuel cells are a source of clean energy, delivering power to customer sites without the risk of ground contamination, CO2 emissions and fuel spillage. With a hydrogen fuel cell, the only emissions at the point of use are water and warm air.
Bulk hydrogen refueling is currently being used by ReliOn customers as part of a Department of Energy (DoE) Market Transformation Program. This program has resulted in a significant number of new fuel cell deployments where backup power of 72 hours or more is required. Critical to the success of this program has been hydrogen supplier commitment to deliver the bulk hydrogen to locations in several regions around the United States. Together, ReliOn and multiple tier one telecommunications customers have successfully deployed these bulk storage units. The storage and refueling solution may be used with any stationary fuel cell product.
Gary Flood, ReliOn President and CEO commented, “Because fuel cells provide highly reliable, clean energy, they are being deployed as an alternative to diesel generators at a growing number of locations where backup power is a critical requirement. Additionally, the availability of the bulk refueling solution offers customers a safe, reliable solution for longer runtimes.”
